Why Jammed Garage Doors Happen

Considering the number of components that make it work, there is no shortage of things that can go wrong with a garage door. That makes diagnosing the problem difficult. While there are some things you can do at home to figure out what’s wrong, we feel it’s best to call our experts if your garage door is jammed. Many jamming problems can be dangerous to resolve on your own. So why are you having trouble? Jammed garage doors are usually the result of:

A jammed or obstructed track: If debris made its way into your garage door’s tracks, then this could be the cause of the jam. Cal’s Garage Doors’ specialists know how to find the source of the jam and unclog it. We’ll also investigate and make sure there aren’t any other contributing factors.

A spring is broken, or a pulley jammed: The springs and pulleys are other factors in jammed garage doors. They work in concert to pull the garage door open, so if a spring is broken or the pulley is jammed, they won’t be able to do their jobs effectively.

The garage door is off-track: The door might have been knocked off the track. If that’s the case, you should not attempt to remedy the situation yourself. Garage doors are hefty, and it’s not so simple as putting the door back on the tracks. We’ll make sure everything else is synched up.

The garage door isn’t calibrated correctly: Sometimes you need to tinker with new garage doors before they function correctly. Usually, this is due to the door’s sensitivity settings. If they’re set too low or high, the door will not open. Your owner’s manual includes instructions for adjusting it.

The remote control isn’t working: Remote controls fail for a variety of reasons. In some cases, you’re just out of range. Move closer. Sometimes, the antenna on the motor is broken or the wall switch battery is dead. Lastly, sometimes, you’ll need to reprogram the remote.

The door is locked: Believe it or not, some of our repair calls involve doors that were locked. It’s easy enough to lock the door without realizing it. You might be in a hurry when you call us, so before you give Cal’s Garage Doors a call, make sure the lock isn’t engaged.

The power source is disconnected: As with the manual lock situation, some people accidentally unplug the power supply without realizing it. Before you call Cal’s Garage Doors, make sure the power is connected. You can save yourself both time and trouble by being thorough.

You haven’t lubricated the components: Poor lubrication is a common culprit of jammed garage doors. You should be lubricating the tracks, pulleys, springs, and other elements of your garage door system yearly, if not more often. Doing so prevents jams.

The track is bent or damaged: If an external force bent or damaged the tracks, then the pulleys and springs won’t be able to lift the door open. We’ll have to replace the tracks to rectify the situation, so give us a call right away.

The sensor is malfunctioning: Your garage door opener’s sensor might think there’s an obstruction in its path. We can test the sensor and find out whether that’s the case.
